Aggregate is when there are two different matches, called legs. The score from each match is added up to see who is the overall winner. The two matches are played at both stadiums. Let's pretend it was Man United vs Real Madrid. The first leg could be in the Santiago Bernabeu and the score could be Real Madrid 2-1 Man United. However, the second leg would then be in Old Trafford, and the score could be Man United 4-2 Real Madrid. So then if you add up these scores, Man United would advance, because the score is Man United 5-3 Real Madrid.

But if the overall score is tied, it then sees who scored the most away goals. So let's rearrange the goals. Say at Santiago Bernabeu it's Real Madrid 2-1 Man United. And then at Old Trafford it's Man United 4-3 Real Madrid. It's now tied at 5-5. But Real Madrid would go through because they scored 3 away goals, Man U only scored 1.

aggregate goals means the total goals count from teams that play each other twice, home & away. this is usually used in the knock-out stage of a competition, such as UEFA Champions' League or UEFA Cup. the team that score the most goals over two matches will progress to the next phase.

for example, here's the result of the 2005-2006 UEFA Champions' League knock-out stage:

1st match - Chelsea 1-2 FC Barcelona

2nd match - FC Barcelona 1-1 Chelsea

Which means Barcelona went through to the next round because they score 2 in the first round and another in the second which means the final score all together was

Chelsea 2-3 FC Barcelona

Sum of scores from multiple games between two teams. Competition like the champions league avoid giving one team the home advantage by playing two games, one in each stadium. They add up the scores and that determines the victor.
