I watched a program the other day, and recalled the many inspirational players and captains Liverpool had throughout the ages.
So before you mention Steven Gerrard, consider these players first, many of whom who captained Liverpool during their most succeed period.

1. Ron Yeats (1st Captain to lift the FA Cup, 1st Captain under Shankly to lift the title)

2. Billy Liddell (Shankly's 1st Captain. His goals propelled Liverpool to promotion and eventual success later on)

3) Tommy Smith ( Played 600+ games for them and scored in their 1st European Cup Final victory - his last match)

4) Emelyn Hughes (Shankly's last and Paiseley's 1st Captain. Lifted their first 2 European Cups)

5) Phil Thompson (Captain during late 70s and early 80s)

6) Graeme Souness (Captain of the Treble winning side of 1984)

7) Alan Hansen (1st Captain to lift the Double and last to win the title)

8) Mark Wright (Regular England International, took over from Hansen)

9) Ian Rush (Captain during his final spell at the club 1993-1996)

10) Steven Gerrard (took over from Jamie Redknapp in 2003)

My choice would be Hansen, but watching Yeats the other day, the man was amazing, a giant in every sense of the word.

Anyway here's a clip of the 1984 European Cup Final, which would surely bring a smile to any Reds fan;

No Jamie Rednapp on the list well in that case I'll say Emlyn Hughes but a good number of choices.
