Question:
Why do we have an English soccer player on an American team?

Seriously, what the hell is Beckham here for? Soccer or Hollywood? America spend $250 million dollars on this British retard. Somebody should put him on a boat and send him back to his mother land. We could've done so much better if we invested that much money on 40 million Americans who are dying because of no health care! $250 million - wow!
I bet his mother land can't afford to pay him so he moved here, and for Hollywood.

oh damn, Medium Dave just gave you a giant burn......but anyway, you gotta remember that beckham was also trying to bring the mls fame....and wouldn't you agree that he has done that? my cousins in Canada and Australia watch mls games to see Beckham play. and its not like he is bad, they have found success when he is on the pitch, he opens up the game and isn't selfish. I bet if half the people on this question followed soccer they would know that.....i am not against him going to Milan either. he is trying to make the England squad, and face it, he isn't going to get the quality training in the states

and where are you getting these mythical numbers from.

"The £128m deal is understood to comprise his salary, existing sponsorship contracts, merchandising shirt sales and a share of the club profits." - quote from BBC sports

thats about 180mill USD TOTAL...not a transfer fee, TOTAL over a fixed amout of time! which he only makes 5.5million a year, and alot of that went to real madrid

Alright since you have the story completely wrong I have to clarify. First off America did not buy anyone, the LA Galaxy (an America club team) bought him with their money, not the governments' money. And they brought him over because he is the best known name in the US and very good player to promote soccer and sell merchandise like he did.

Also, you obviously don't know how much money club teams have. And why would a club team play for Americans health care. Plus, where did you get 40 million Americans from. Please do some research next time and come up with an Intelligent question so I don't waste my time.

Americans wanted to buy Beckham so badly so they spent $250 million on him. You should be asking your fellow Americans why they spent so much on Beckham. The real reason was to help Football (soccer) to grow as a sport in the US and since his arrival, the sport has not only grown so much but the income has floated to the skies. Hardly any people around the world knew that Americans play 'soccer' too until Beckham went there.

First of all, the LA Galaxy is a soccer CLUB not a national TEAM, so, just as in basketball, a club representing a city can sign whoever they want, just as the phoenix suns signed a canadian. Secondly, the 250 million dollar paycheck does not come from american taxpayer money, it is a salary being payed by a corporation (LA galaxy is just as much a company as microsoft is), and the money comes from merchandise sold, ticket sales, etc.

You seem to have confused a number of different issues,

Item - Football is part sport, part entertainment and very much a business.

Item - Brand Beckham is global, attracts worldwide interest counted in millions. Millions now know of LA Galaxy.

Item - Fair dues, perhaps you're another Anglophobe and that's your privilege. But if your 'America First' attitude prevailed, how would you feel if we banned 'works' by Tom Cruise et al ?

Item - Beckham's basic football wages are comparable to those of other top players. Add-ons reflect his marketability, which LA Galaxy fixed in order to attract him across the pond.

Item - His deal can't be linked to your inadequate healthcare provision - that's for the voters of the US of A to

decide, not the owners of a football club. As a Brit, Beckham would support our NHS system, which is regarded by many of your countrymen as an example of detested Socialism.

Item - As for being a 'retard', Becks is footballer not a College Professor. And he's not done too badly, has he ?

But you remind me of one your NFL players who was coming over to play Gridiron at Wembley - and a bit nervous about making his first trip abroad. But he was mightily relieved when he found out we speak English in London. (True story.)

Yeah, I can see it in the boardroom now. It must have been a tight decision for a FOOTBALL CLUB between buying a player, and donating a massive percentage of their bank balance towards helping the terminally useless.

Get a grip, you ridiculous prole. Many people draw high wages - many higher than his. The only reason you dislike him is because he's not American - if he had been, you would probably have removed teh grass-stalk from your mouth long enough to utter a rudimentary 'yyeeeeeee-HAW' for his good fortune.

Go and trim your mullet. Your sister will appreciate it later.

Joy M is completely right. There is pretty much no good team in the world that doesn't have foreigners on the team.

What were you saying when Terry Cooke joined the Rapids? How about when Toronto FC joined MLS? What do you say about Toronto Raptors, Montreal Canadiens? how about Stuart Holden: born in Scotland yet plays for the US National Team? i think you just have a grudge against Beckham. and that's fine but don't go talking about all foreigners when it's just one of them.

David Beckham has or at least had pure quality, something which you American footballers don't have, apart from Brad Friedel.

Yes his fee is way too high considering he hardly plays for you, but still the experience he brings is worth alot.

As for Healthcare, we have a brilliant system in the UK where everyone is cared for. Maybe if the US nationalised healthcare, rather than being xenophobic and invading everyone, people wouldn't be dying?

Look Beckham has a lot of fame here in the US. He cant afford to just leave the US along with all the fame money etc. And he's doing good here in LA Galaxy.

But dont worry he wants to go back to AC Milan anyway.

When you get an American who can play at the standard Beckham played at then come to me with your bigotry.

It has been common practice for Football (it`s real name) teams to recruit the "best players" regardless of ethnicity or nationality for many years ,we`ve even had American players in our league sides in the UK on occasion (admittedly mostly goalies since Yanks like to handle the ball as opposed to kicking it).

Did your government pay for him personally ?Or was it L.A. Galaxy and it`s owners ?

I think that if "40 million Americans who are dying because of no health care" you should probably take that up with your elected representatives - it sound an alarming and very 3rd world statistic!

In the UK of course there is the National Heath Service, which although not perfect, means that our nationals are much better looked after.

Every team Beckham plays for will make money, not because of his skills but because there are over ten million people across the globe who will buy the shirt of the team he plays for. $$$$$

Not only this but it will promote and advertise football in America as he is married to a Spice Girl and is a big name that once played for Man U. $$$$

So the huge amount of money spent on him, will pay for itself over a relatively short period of time.

I don't agree with your claim that foreigners shouldn't be given preference. If a striker the likes of Didier Drogba wanted to join MLS, he should be given preference. However, with this preference comes value. Beckham is not worth $250 mil. It's BS. We need to ship his British @$$ back to England.

as painful as this may sound, your just the latest club to fall for the beckham stardom, putting his fame and merchandising before his actual playing talent, mr and mrs beckham operate on a maximum cash earnings only, with no loyalty or allegiance to any club, the beckham brand is a massive cash cow, clubs that can afford his wages, know that what he brings in is huge sales of kits, interest by the media, the beckham circus rolls on, with cash being the only motive, this guy has agents and advisers that would make Obama's back room staff seem small, and there all on the payroll, any decision to move to another club is made by his bank manager rather than beckham himself.... welcome to the beckham paper trail !

I challenge you to find an international soccer club that DOESN'T have non-citizens on the team.
