get to play for England for example in the Euro 2012 even though their original country isn't England?

There are cerain rules for this.
If you have represented any other country before, then you cannot represent England even after you get UK citizenship.
You can play for any country if your parent or grandparents were born there but you cannot play for 2 different countries in your career.
eg: Mesut Oezil's grandfather was Turkish and moved to Germany 45 years ago. His father was born in Germany and he is a 3rd generation German. THis makes him eligible to play for Turkey as well as Germany but he chose Germany,
Now he cannot play for Turkey.
Some players have dual citizenship, like Lucas has Italian citizenship too but he plays for his home country Brasil.

I hink the rules are, you have to be a British citizen, have a British passport and have played in the country for 4 years

Owen Hargreaves was born in Canada but he played for England because one of his parents were English.
