Fergusons acheivements are amazing but Paisley won back to back European Cups, and at a time when ONLY the English Champions could qualify for the European cup, unlike now when u can finish fourth and qualify, so Ferguson had more bites at the cherry if u see what i mean. Also u should take into account that squads were much smaller back then so u couldnt call up on big reserves of players as cover and that the league used to be more even/competitve with more games.

So hard to answer. A few years ago I would have said Bob Paisley. I grew up watching his teams dominating domestic and European football and at their best, they were just about unbeatable. However, Ferguson has won the lot at Man Utd and virtually dominated the English game since the early 90's. I'll have to sit on the fence and put them as equals.

However, the one thing that has always wound me up is that Bob Paisley was never knighted. That is a disgrace and I think fans of most clubs would agree...

IMO its Ferguson, there is no denying Bob Paisley was a truly great manager but as another answer said he was left a great team, Fergie on the other hand had to rebuild almost the whole club at United, he started from scratch and rebuilt the youth system, sold a lot of top players who where all in the middle of the drinking culture at Old Trafford and basically built a whole first team squad, Ferguson's record now speaks for itself and stands out on its own in top class football, so for me Ferguson is the greatest manager of all time.

Alex Ferguson. He has done it all in the most competitive and advanced era in football history. Compertition these days are ALOT more tougher than in Bob Paisley's time. I'm not taking anything away from Bob tho.

The best English manager of all time, same as Clough, but then what about the greats who were Scottish Stein,Shankly,Ferguson, hard to call as mine would be

1-Stein

2-Paisley

3-Clough

4-Ferguson

5-Shankly

6-Mercer

So on that as Paisley is at No2,WOULD BE HIM.RIP

At the Tds-Is Durham in Scotland?

He's the most successful, ratio wise Ferguson is below Paisley and a hell of a lot further behind than Stein so no where close as most knowledgeable fans know.

Sir Alex Ferguson, obviously, as he has not only won with Man United, but also won a lot of honours at Aberdeen as well.

leaving Paisley well behind in the trophy count.

Bob Paisley vs SAF team honours (Paisley at liverpool SAF at man utd)

league titles

Paisley 6

SAF 11

European Cups ( champions league )

Paisley 3

SAF 2

Other honours

Pailsley 3 league cups, 5 charity shields, 1 uefa cup

SAF 5 FA cups, 3 league cups, 7 charity shield + 1 shared, 1 cup winners cup, 1 super cup, 1 intercontinental cup, 1 world club cup.

Paisley 18

SAF 32 + 1 shared

So based on those facts SAF, but undeniably Bob Paisley was a great manager

good point Jonny 2009 NI but players didn't cost as much then as they did now

A really tough question, I don't think that you can compare the two. Both have done amazing things at their clubs.

Some may that Paisey is better as he has won 3 European Cups, whilst Fergie has won 2, others may say that Fergie is better because he has won more league titles and FA Cups.

In my personal opinion, Fergie just edges it, taking into account all the players he has bought in through the youth teams and the way he has nurtured talented players, Beckham, Cantona, Ronaldo etc.

Fergie for me...we can go on and on about Paisley's back to back European Cups(credit to him for that) but Fergie's achievements speak for themselves. And to anyone who would say, but Paisley never had Fergie's money or longetivity, its kinda a moot point cuz we'll never know. Money doesn't always guarantee success plus Fergie's record in SCOTLAND before United, speaks for itself, Aberden weren't exactly brimming with cash and he still brought club honours(EIGHT in the seven years he spent there)...

Bob Paisley, because of the tactics they played were always consistent, too good for many teams.

Fergie's great, don't get me wrong, but the team itself seems very lacklustre at times.rely too much on individuals having a fantastic game.

difficult to answer .. bob was great there is no denying.. but he was left a fantastic side by shankley.. who imho was a better manager than paisley... saying that .. paisley possibly left a better side than shankley.. fergie on the other hand built a team from scratch.. (like shankley).. knocked it down and built again...( repeat)..paisley never made mistakes but fergie has... when your building teams for over 20 years your going to ...my vote goes to SAF... call me one eyed if you want but you asked for a honest opinion..

Well I support Manchester United of course I'm going to be biased and say Sir Alex. Any real United fan would. Why would we pick Bob over our Fergie? YOU FOOOOOOOOL! :)

He is the most successful football manager in British history. You can't argue with that can you?

EDIT: TDs? Oh cummon this is my opinion and the sad bums who did that need to look at the FACTS ;).
